Welcome to a 2010 revision of my 2009 PickPath cache series that circled Pickerel Lake. It’s time to come back out to this beautiful area, take a hike, enjoy nature and grab 10 caches while doing so!
This small cache is the sixth of the current series of 10 caches along the Pickerel Lake Pathway.(Or the fifth of 10 if you are traveling counterclockwise!)
All caches are either very near the trail or within 50 feet. Your GPS will tell you!
The path is rated a 2 1/2 terrain because it is somewhat rolling, portions may be soggy after heavy rains. It has roots in some sections and there is a bridge and a couple of boardwalks to cross. The entire trail is about two miles long. It is marked with blue paint blazes; stay on the trail and do not yield to temptation to take a short cut---unless you like getting your feet wet and mucky.
Also, use common sense and do not wear flip flops!! Tennis shoes are fine most of the time, good hiking shoes are preferred. Of course, if you must wear your summer flip flops, don't complain when your toes are skeeter-bitten or brown from mushing through deer and elk scat, which is abundant along the pathway. All sorts of creatures use this pathway, two legged and four legged! Another reason for wearing decent footwear is that ticks between the toes are really, really, really yucky!!
Access to this area is via US-27. Take Sturgeon Valley Road eastward. Turn north onto Pickerel Lake Road. Follow Pickerel Lake Road until you arrive at Pickerel Lake State Campground, WHICH IS NOW OPEN after having been closed most of last summer. There is plenty of parking. It's a good little fishing lake; kayaks, canoes, rowboats and boats with electric motors only.
Loons were on the lake last year, and eagle sightings were common. UPDATE 5/2/2010--THE LOONS ARE BACK!! Please respect their need for solitude and do not approach; simply enjoy the sight and their wonderful haunting calls!
