Cross-country skiing is a winter sport in which participants
propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and
poles.
Cross-country skiing is part of the Nordic skiing sport family,
which also includes ski jumping, and a combination sport of
cross-country skiing and ski jumping called Nordic combined.
Another combination sport is ski-orienteering, which adds the skill
of map navigation along snow trails and tracks.
The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area is named in honor of Art Roscoe,
a park forester who was instrumental in the early development of
Nordic skiing at Allegany State Park. Partially comprised of old,
narrow gauge railroad beds that wander through beautiful old-growth
hardwood forests, the scenic trails often offer spectacular views
of the surrounding Allegheny Mountains.
