Legends of the PIT
One day on a hunting trip, Silver Fox, of the Miami tribe, came across a cave entrance. Knowing the legends passed down from his forefathers of seeing marks placed on the walls of the cave, and the warning that nobody that has gone into the darkness has ever returned, he felt his position in the tribe would be set if he were to take on the demons within and subdue them. Tribal tales attest to his failure as he was never seen again.
In 1670, Frenchman René-Robert Cavelier explored the Ohio region. His group stumbled across a cave in which they took refuge in a storm. Jean-Paul Russont, a porter for the group, decided to see how deep the cave extended. Without permission or assistance, he probed the bowels of the cave. After a while, the entourage missed him and decided to look for him.
After a bit of a trek into the darkness, they heard distant screams. Calling out to their missing countryman, they received no replies. Rushing toward the screams, they stopped in their tracks when a distinct growl was heard. Retreating faster than they entered, they abandoned the cave as the final resting place for their fallen comarade.

The Ohio Company of Virginia sent Christopher Gist to explore the area in 1750. A squad of militia was sent into the cave they discovered as the main company awaited outside. Gunshots echoed from the mouth of the cave. The cadre remained outside, guns ready, for 3 days. Nary a soul from the squad ever emerged and the company decided to continue their survey. They left the missing members' personal effects as monuments to their loss.
In 1884, Eustes Greensides established a homestead nearby. He and his family of 6 sons built a farmhouse just down the dell. When a goat got loose, 4 of the boys chased after it. Although they had heard the tales of a demon-possessed cave, they did not believe. The goat chose the cave to hide. Hearing the bleats, the boys entered as well. The other sons knew their brothers were chasing the goat. After several hours, they followed, concerned for their safety. Finding the cave, they heard muffled sounds coming from within. They, too, entered. After months of grieving, the Greensides family moved on to Iowa to establish a new homestead.
As the city spread, Cincinnati wanted a subway to deal with the growth. A crew found the entrance while out on an errand to obtain materials. Curiosity overcame them. Used to dark and dank places, they entered. Four members on the city payroll were never seen again. Their vehicle was found only feet away from the entrance. City officials, fearing the backlash of publicity, partially succeeded in keeping the situation secret by telling a supervisor to drive their vehicle into the nearby Ohio River and claiming their loss to the Mighty Ohio.
In 1924, the site was excavated to add it to the new subway. An entrance was created. Concrete was poured for quite a distance to stabilize the new tunnel. Crews were sent in to lengthen it to join with the rest of the project. A 2nd shift crew went to work. The next day, their tools were found on the floor of the unrenovated cave floor, bloody and with what appeared to be bite marks and chips from the wooden handles from quite a skirmish. Nothing more was done to the site, and the rumors and tales led to the slow demise of the entire project.
Are you ready to enter the bowels of Hell itself? Are you ready and able to rescue the lost souls this Pit has claimed? If you take on this challenge, make sure someone remaining above knows when & where you entered. It may be necessary for the paperwork to follow. Before you enter, snap a picture and we'll add you to the list of legends.

Congrats to Liyah and lostsoleky for the First To Find!
