Geocache Description:

Another caching' location that I shamelessly stole from Canalgirl. She put in all the hard work on this cache and is allowing me to copy and paste her listing. Thank You Canalgirl and to all of you who already found this, come and get you another free smiley. Swiz

In 1906 State Engineer Noble Whitford was commissioned by Governor Teddy Roosevelt to locate and document every canal feature in NY State. When it came to aqueducts and culverts, especially large culverts, sometimes he got it right and sometimes he got it wrong.

Was this an aqueduct or culvert located at the above coordinates? There is no marker to tell you the answer and nothing remains of the structure. Even Whitford got quite confused with this one, he placed it in both the aqueduct and culvert sections of his report. As an aqueduct he called it the Van Wie Aqueduct over the Tokkon Creek in Auriesville but as a culvert he listed it as simply the Auriesville Creek culvert. The answer? It was a small aqueduct, only 105 feet across and had only 4 arches but it was an aqueduct.

The cache is a 1 gallon tupperware container. Please make sure the top in on tight. This is a pleasant area. I watched two large fish in the water and saw a duck hanging out on a rock. Bring your fishing pole!
