Geocache Description:

CNOC NA NAOMH

The legend is that Cnoc na Naomh got it's name when 3 local saints couldn't decide which of them should go to convert the then pagans of Tory Island. Fionan, Begley and Colmcille decided that whichever of them managed to throw his crozier from the top of the hill to the island should be the one to bring Christianity to Tory. Colmcille's crozier was the only one to reach Tory, Fionan's and Begley's both landing near Falcarragh.

Some years ago the local branch of the Knights of Columbanus erected a cross on top of the hill and Mass is celebrated there once a year. More recently stations of the cross were erected along the path to the cross and a re-enactment of the stations of the cross takes place once a year on Good Friday.

To reach the cache location, take the road immediately behind the Pub - Dixon's of Meenlaragh - follow this road to the waypoint N 55.08.571 W 008.11.321 where the road forks, keep to the righ here and continue up the hill until you come to a cattle grid. Unless you are driving a 4x4 or a tractor it is advisable to park here and then follow the track (now untarred) until the next fork and keep right again. At the rosary garden (Paidirín) follow the tarred path past the stations of the cross. You are nearly at the cache location now. You will have noticed an alternative tarred roadway near the rosary garden but it passes through private property and is only open for public access on Good Friday.

The Cache is a 0.25L tablock box containing a log book and pencil and 4-5 small swapable items.
Please make sure you replace the stone to the left of the actual cache as you return the cache to it's hiding place as otherwise it could be exposed from a certain angle! Thank you

Don't forget your camera as there are fantastic views from top of the hill, including the islands of Innisboffin, Tory and Aranmore, the Derryveagh Mountains and Horn Head.
