INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #693

"Little Union Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Little Union Cemetery in Benton Township of Monroe County. Despite the name, this is not a little cemetery. It consists of three parts surrounding the Little Union Baptist Church. The cache is located in the older pioneer section. The church has erected a nice memorial which list the significant number of veterans buried here. There are two veterans of the War of 1812, as well as many from the Civil War and later wars.

War of 1812 Veterans

These two gentlemen were soldiers during the War of 1812. Both lived well past the average age for the time. John Richardson was a very early settler in the Indiana Territory. He served as a corporal in the 7th Regiment under Elliott Herndon. There primary tasks were protecting the area from Indians allied with the British.

There are records of a Captain George Richardson who served with Ohio troops during the war but I am unable to determine with certainty if this is the same George Richardson.

Civil War Veteran

Elijah Goodman served in the 79th Indiana Infantry. This regiment served in Tennessee and through the south during the war. They saw action in many of the western theater's biggest battles. These include the Battles of Perryville, Stones River, Missionary Ridge Chatanooga, Chickamauga, Atlanta Franklin and Nashville. It was reported the regiment lost close to a third of its men in the Battle of Stones River. Their biggest claim to fame was the charge up Missionary Ridge, one of the most dramatic charges in the war, and one of the few times a frontal assault upon strong defensive positions actually works.

WW I Veteran

James Peterson was a private in the 364th Infantry. The United States was a late entrant into WWI, but the 364th saw action in some major battles. These included Ypres-Lys, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine 1918
