Civil War History “The Pollock Cemetery”

Monument of Confederate Soldier James Pollock, Pollock Family Cemetery. Mexico Farms, South of Cumberland. Erected 2001

Among the graves are those of Confederate soldier Pvt. James D. Pollock and Sallie Pollock-Cook-High, along with other family members
JAMES DICKSON POLLOCK.

James Dickson Pollock was born August 27, 1841, near Cumberland, Md., on the west bend of the Potomac River, and died near Barton, Md., on January 27, 1916, in his seventy-fifth year. He served four years in Company F, 7th Virginia Cavalry, and for his faithful service he had received the Confederate cross of honor through the Daughters of the Confederacy of Maryland. After the war closed he returned to his home, near Cumberland, and there his life was spent on his farm until March, 1915, when he removed to a farm near Barton. He was married in 1896 to Miss Nellie Morris, who, with' their children, two sons and four daughters, lives to mourn the loss of this kind and loving husband and father. His eldest child was named Winnie Davis Pollock, in memory of the cause he loved.
Comrade Pollock was a member of the. James Breathed Camp, U. C. V., of Cumberland, as long as it was kept up. There are few of the veterans there now. Although never a member of the Church, he held to the faith of his parents, who were Presbyterians

SALLIE POLLOCK-COOK-HIGH
1847 – 1890

Sallie Pollock was a spy for the Confederate Army during the Civil War
On April 12, 1864 she was charged with violating the rules of war, when letters addressed to General Robert E. Lee and President Jefferson were found on this great confederate sympathizer.
She was sent to a Union Pentitentary in Pittsburgh, PA. until the end of the war in 1869.

Locating this cache will take you along the scenic C&O Canal just West of Lock # 75 at North Branch

Parking is Available at the NPS parking lot located just off PPG and River road as you cross over Lock # 74 or just off PPG Road at Lock # 75, Then take a stroll West along the gravel pathway till you reach
The bison tube micro you seek is NOT located inside the fenced area, Please DO NOT DISTURB anything Inside the cemetery. You will locate it just outside the perimeter.

Enjoy the quiet serenity, history and take a second to sign the log before leaving without a trace.
