Ten years ago on this day (May 1st 2000), the United States Government announced that they would be shutting off Selective Availability (SA) on Global Positioning Satellites, effectively giving an instant upgrade to tens of thousands of GPS receivers. Literally overnight, the accuracy of civilian GPS receivers improved 10 times.  On May 3rd 2000, Dave Ulmer placed the first "GPS Stash" (geocache) at this location.  Read more history here.

Let's celebrate together! After you have spent the day collecting smiley's or maybe even attending the other events in Huntsville or Montgomery, come over and share some tales around the campfire.

The event officially kicks off at 6:00 pm and we can party til' whenever. Not only can we trade stories, but we can swap trackables and hints and celebrate all things that are geocaching. We will not be officially serving any food, so you might want to get dinner before you arrive or bring something to cook on the fire if you so desire.

In addition to the standard event cache Guidelines, there are a few additional guidelines that we will need to follow if we wish our event to qualify for a 10 Years! cache type icon. (Hear that Lazer?)

Additional Guidelines:

-At least 10 people must attend the event.
-A video or picture must be taken at the event. At least 10 attendees must be in the video/photo along with a legible sign showing the event coordinates and location name. Lets plan to do this at 7:00 while we have daylight.

-The people in the video or photo should be festive. Be inventive! But please keep it family friendly.

This is land with a large clearing in the center, no bathroom facilities, be prepared!

You have permission to spend the night and camp. Campers should park near the old barn while non-campers should park in the field near the road. From the clearing, you are within walking distance (maybe 700 feet downhill) of the river. This is about one hour from Downtown Huntsville and 30 minutes from Downtown Birmingham.

Things to bring: Camp Chair, Bug Spray, Beverage of Choice, Smores stuff, etc. The coordinates take you to the parking area. From there, you need to head into the woods along a path about the width of a car. (Go between the wooden posts if you take the right trail, or walk around the gate and past the barn if you take the left or upper trail in the photo below.) I hope to hang cyalumes along the trail so you can easily find your way to the campfire area (about 200 feet from the parking area). If you plan to stay overnight, find me to let you into the overnight parking area near the old barn. The group shot. The log
