Geocache Description:

Near a bridge over the Settle-Carlisle line

Grisedale Crossing is the only plate-girder footbridge on the Settle-Carlisle line. It was built in 1936, replacing the old wooden footbridge over which my grandfather walked twice a day from Grisedale to attend Lunds school in Edwardian times. In the early hours of Christmas Eve, 1910, the “Scotch Express” (London St Pancreas to Glasgow sleeper) was wrecked near here, resulting in 12 deaths. See here for details (visit link) Walks from Garsdale Station and Grisedale pass over the cache, or roadside parking is available on the B6259 north of the Moorcock Inn. The track up to the crossing is private for vehicles but there is a footpath from South Lunds (It starts opposite the house just north of the old school, at the nearest point to the cache on the main road.) The footpath is very wet! The cache is a small container and it is NOT on railway property or on private property (and not in a wall, of course).
