NED KELLYS HIDEOUT
This cache is hidden not far from one of the reputed hide-outs for Australia’s most famous bushranger (or highwayman to the brits or outlaw to the yanks). Recently the book “the true story of the Kelly gang” has won the second booker prize in 2001 for author Peter Cary, a great read!. Ned Kelly’s gang was also the most successful bushrangers in Australia’s history, and gave much of his loot to the poor. His gang wore iron plate bullet proof amour which saved them from capture and death until his last stand at Glenrowan (-36.467 146.233). Not far from the cahce and well worth a visit has a animatronic museum and display. This is not far from Wangaratta (-36.367 146.333) which is Australia’s Jazz capital with the great jazz festival every year in the first week of November. This area is also one of the great wine growing regions, with worlds best muscats, tokays and durifs as well as great reds and whites. Wineries Auldstones (36 22.728S 146 10.965E), Baileys (36 25.0082 S 146 11.559 E) and Booths are located close by. The warby ranges where the hideout is, is lightly forested and makes for easy walking. The cache can be approached by various directions but please observe restrictions on the use of 4wd in some tracks in the state park and do not cross private land.
