This Cache is in honour of the famous Turtons who for generations have made the bricks that built the Hunter.

Robert Turton was an English brickmaker and potter who arrived in Newcastle in 1851 and started brickmaking in Darby Street before moving to Waratah, then East Maitland.

The East Maitland area was home to as many as nine brickyards, including, this, Fred Baker's Metford yard.

Brickworks were tough places. They were fired by coal and relied heavily on fleets of horses to work the machinery and haul products.

PGH bought the Turton works in 1969 and the site had operated as a brickworks uninterrupted since 1882.

The history claims that most families in the Maitland area had a relative or a friend who worked for either Turtons or PGH.

The Turton works finally became part of the PGH and CSR companies, and closed in 2006.

If you have more history, information or corrections for this listing , I would be pleased if you could take the time to share it.
