Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden at the cross roads of an important and ancient saltway from Cheshire across the pennines and the turnpikes linking Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester.

At this crossroads is a pub that nobody wanted!

The placing of this cache is in celebration of the birth of my first grandchild, who on her father's side is a decendent of the Vernon's, Inn Keepers of the inn at this crossroads in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

The cache is on land belonging to the pub with permission, so please be mindful that you are on someone's property.

The building that is now the Wanted Inn was built by the first Earl of Devonshire as a farmstead in 1618. The first tenants were the Vernon family who are direct ancestors of my grandchild.

When the farmstead became “The Three Tuns” in 1700 the first inn keeper was John Vernon (9th great uncle).

Perhaps because he wanted the travellers that had stopped at the Toll House to know the inn belonged to him The sixth Duke of Devonshire changed the name of the public house to “The Devonshire Arms” in 1839. Joseph Vernon (5 times great grandfather) was the next family member to become the renamed inn's keeper. Joseph’s daughter, Ann Vernon (5 times great aunt) followed as innkeeper in 1843. She was succeeded in 1847 by Samuel Vernon her brother (5 times great uncle) where he lived and farmed with his family until 1875.

It was in 1950 that the inn became unwanted when the 10th Duke of Devonshire died and his death duties meant that the inn needed to be sold to raise the tax. At the subsequent auction the pub remained unsold. When it was finally purchased in a second auction in 1956 this prominent pub was renamed The Wanted Inn... because it now was!
