Swell Nell Traditional Cache

The Mole Creek, Dairy Plains and Deloraine plains are so beautiful and so down there…..
The track less Nells Bluff is an almost pristine sub alpine plateau whose northern edges swoop down to fertile dairy plains below. This cache is right on the edge of the escarpment and at 1100m the view is a bit impressive. The dolerite rocks come in many shapes and sizes allowing kids imagination to go into overdrive, are quite abrasive on boots and therefore offer excellent grip when rock hopping. The vegetation can be quite waterlogged and reedy patches dot this highland area and the range of mosses, lichens, and sedges is amazing. The C.Eyres took a amazingly long time to cross the bluff from the hut because they were distracted by the many natural treasures of this alpine wonderland
Ragwort clumps dotted the heath and we removed flower heads and pulled up this noxious weed. It would be a tragedy if Ragwort were to replace the myriad of flora species in these subalpine areas so visitors may want to bring plastic bags to remove the yellow flower and seed heads.
Cache information. The cache container is the painted 90mm PVC model and the first photo is near the cache, the GPSr gives the location away though there is a small cairn there now. The cache should be not be hidden by snow drifts.
Personal Warnings. This cache on Nells Bluff is in an isolated sub alpine area surrounded by considerable drops. Be prepared for severe inclement weather at all times of the year and take extreme care if icy conditions are encountered. Take enough provisions to cater for an unexpected overnight stay as the weather can deteriorate with startling suddenness. Have an evacuation plan in case of injury, illness or snake/spider bite. An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is recommended and always tell a responsible person where you are going and your expected time of return. Phone reception is excellent at the cache site.
This is an off track route and it would be wise to leave intentions including time left in the log book at the Lady Lake Hut.
Be careful and be prepared and hopefully you will be rewarded with some of the most amazing farming valley and sub alpine vistas when you go exploring for the cache “Swell Nell”.
