Site of a fatal old west shootout between rival factions for the control of the Estancia Valley.
In 1847 don Antonio Otero purchased the old Spanish Baca landgrant. A second landgrant was deeded to Antonio Sandoval. Sandoval's interest was sold to a wealthy Boston capitalist Joel Whitney. Inevitable conflict over the control of the valley broke out in a shooting war between the Whitney vaqueros and the Otero sheepherders. The cache site was the site of a classic wild west shoot out resulting in the deaths of Otero, his brother in law and Dr. Edmund Henriquez of Las Vegas, NM. Whitney was arrested but acquited because it could not be proved he fired the fatal shot.
The ownership of the Estancia Valley was brought to court, which decided neither claim was valid and the valley became public land.
There is a commemorative plaque across the street outside of the fire/ police station.
More history details are found in the cache.
Across the street is Arthur Park with a small lake, cottonwoods, playground, picnic facilities and the only public outdoor swimming pool in Torrance County.
