WEST CEDAR VALLEY, Tooele County -- A man was killed after
falling down a 50-foot mine shaft while four-wheeling Saturday
morning.
Killed was:Robert Bartholomew, 26, American Fork.
Bartholomew and his brother-in-law, whose name and age were not
available, were riding ATVs near the border of Tooele and Utah
counties about 10:15 a.m. when they headed up a hill that appeared
to have a flat surface, said Tooele County Sheriff Frank
Scharmann.
On top of the hill is a mine shaft with an opening between 10
and 15 feet wide, Scharmann said. Bartholomew, who apparently was
riding in front, drove directly into the hole and plunged
approximately 50 feet with his vehicle.
Bartholomew was carrying the cellular phone the pair had brought
with them, forcing the brother-in-law to flag down other people in
the area to call for help, Scharmann said. Rescuers from Tooele and
Utah counties arrived about 11:45 a.m., rappelled down the hole and
found Bartholomew dead.
A doctor at the scene said he believes Bartholomew may have died
shortly after impact due to massive head injuries. He had not been
wearing a helmet, Scharmann said.
The area of the accident is popular for four-wheelers and other
outdoor activities, but it is also dotted by abandoned mine shafts
that are not always obvious, Scharmann said.
