Geocache Description:

This is a replacement for my original cache, Back to Rushton’s Time, which was located on this island. I’ve tried to make this new one much more family friendly and attractive to visitors passing through our village.

This is a regular cache located on Falls Island in Canton, N.Y. The container is an orange matchsafe which is very carefully hidden. There is room for only the log so be sure to bring your own pen. Please replace the cache in its original position so that the next cacher will have the enjoyment of finding it. This can be a popular area so be on the lookout for muggles. The cache is located very close to the marked trail so you shouldn’t need to do any bushwhacking. Sturdy footwear and a sense of caution are advised. Falls Island has lain fallow for many years, becoming overgrown with all sorts of weeds and brush. The Grasse River Heritage Foundation, with funding through the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, has made numerous improvements including: Restoration of a Kings Bowstring Iron Bridge dating back to 1873. This is one of only five remaining bridges of its kind in New York State. The bridge now provides pedestrian access to Falls Island. Development of an interpretive trail to the ruins of several mill and workshop sites as well as scenic points. Construction of a scenic overlook at a dramatic waterfall on the western side of Falls Island. These old mill sites were undoubtedly active during the working years of J. Henry Rushton, the renowned Canton boat builder, best known for his canoes and Adirondack Guide boats including the Sairy Gamp, built for George Washington Sears (Nessmuck), which now resides at the Adirondack Museum, now known as The Adirondack Experience, in Blue Mountain Lake. Enjoy your search for this cache while immersing yourself in the history of days gone by.
