Spotted this trailhead as I was driving along Richmond Parkway
one day. Checked the East Bay Regional Parks web site, and yes,
there is a new trail being constructed along Wildcat Creek. When
completed, the 9.5-mile Wildcat Creek Trail will connect the East
Bay Skyline National Trail in Tilden with the San Francisco Bay
Trail along San Pablo Bay.
Access to the parking lot is only available from westbound
Richmond Parkway (from I-80). If traveling eastbound (from I-580),
you can make a U-turn at Pittsburg Avenue. Hours are 5 am to 10 pm,
but the lot may be closed well before dark. Space for only one or
two cars when the lot is closed.
From here, the trail extends west from Richmond Parkway about a
third of a mile to an observation deck with wetland viewss on all
sides. Currently, there is no crossing Richmond Parkway at the
creek, so a detour north to Pittsburg Avenue, then right on 3rd St
is required to travel eastward along the trail.
The trail has been lightly visited in my experience, but watch
for muggles and replace the cache as you found it.
