Geocache Description:

This is the third of four Bright Materials caches

This cache celebrates metal and all of the things made from it.

I imagine that most people would want to approach this cache from Gladstone Street. I had originally placed this cache right next to the LTV Steel Mill, but I decided that an ammo box so close to an active rail line would be a bad idea. This spot was a close second due to its view of the old mill and the continued theme of the other caches. The cache is hidden on one side by concrete blocks and the other side by wood. MOVE THE WOOD AND NOT THE CONCRETE BLOCKS! It will be so much easier for you.

The feeling of the whole area is decay and sums up the Pittsburgh steel industry in general. However, the U.S. is still the third largest steel producer in the world.

I would ask that people make an effort to place items made of metal in this cache (geocoins are especially always appreciated). The first to find prize is an unactivated geocoin that the finder should use as they see fit. The activation code is included with the coin.

* * * The Dream * * *
The third dream was the most disturbing of all. This time I stood on a lonely road looking down into a valley where a river flowed. Between me and the river there was a dilapidated neighborhood. I was startled to see a frail old man with arthritic legs and a white beard. He kept his gazed fixed on me while pointing down to a monstrous building that was falling into decay.

“Iron and Brass” He whispered “Iron and Brass!” He said it again slowly, but the words became louder with more than a hint of anger. “We used to make iron and brass. Look there”. He gestured toward the enormous structure. “Both are beautiful, but one is stronger and the other is prettier. Now, both are made somewhere else. How did we let this happen? Why did we forget how to be strong and clever?” I recognized the man as Andrew Carnegie. While in the first dream he had been vital and strong. In this dream he was weak and unsure of himself. “Why did we put down the hammer and tongs?” He began to cry openly and I felt both sorry and embarrassed for him.

He squared his shoulders and stood up a bit straighter. I could see remnants of the strong man that he used to be. He held up a green metal box and opened the lid. Out of it he took metal objects. Among other things I noticed candle sticks and coins. “I love metal” he smiled. “You can build a darn good nation with this stuff: Railroads, sky scrapers, flying machines. DARN IT, metal is like blood to a healthy nation!” His shoulders fell again, the lines grew deeper in his face, and his voice came out as a sad sigh. ”Look at this place, we used to be great and now look at us.”

The cache has been stocked with a number of different metal items. I confess, while there is a lot of brass in the cache, the other items are mostly stainless steel. However, the word "iron" is more poetic than "stainless steel". I would love to see some exotic and unusual metals placed in the cache.

Entropy’s chaos eternally stands ready
To reduce creation to ruin.
But of stone and wood and crystal and iron and brass,
The Almighty Maker has ordained that Man
Take these bright materials to create more worlds.
