Geocache Description:

This cache is located at hot springs cove in Maquinna Provincial Park. This is a great place to relax in the natural hot springs. There is now a $3 park fee that is placed in a yellow box at the start of the trail before you enter the board walk.

Created over 160 million years ago under extreme fire and pressure, the igneous and metamorphic of hot springs cove revealed this as a place of dynamic geological activity. this part of Vancouver island rests on an unstable portion of the earths crust known as a fault. this major fault, extending offshore from Mate island, north along the west side of hot springs cove to Hesquiaht lake, is associated with intense heat and pressure generated deep within the earth. Maquina park's main feature, sharp point hot springs, ranks as a major thermal spring in Canada with high water discharge of about 5 to 8 liters per second. the hot springs is a result is a result of surface water flowing through a fault to a depth of about 5 kilometers the water is heated to extreme temperatures where hydrostatic pressure forces the water back up to the surface through fractured rocks.
Hot Springs Cove is an amazing hot spring still enjoyable in its natural state, located in Maquinna Provincial Park in the remote northern end of Clayoquot Sound. The boiling spring water bubbles up from deep in the earth and cascades down a small cliff into a series of natural layered rock pools, cooled by the incoming Pacific Ocean surf, each pool slightly cooler than the one above it. At high tide the surf surges up into the two lower pools creating a unique blend of hot and cool water. This tidal action also flushes the pools twice daily, so they are always noticeably clean. The spring water is very hot and is clear with just a faint smell and taste of sulphur.

Maquinna Marine Provincial Park is situated on the east coast of remote Hesquiat Harbour, 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Tofino on Vancouver Island.

Maquinna Marine Provincial Park now includes an extensive coastal area and has increased in size from 39 hectares to 2,667 hectares, which includes 1,269 hectares of upland and 1,398 hectares of foreshore.
