Sometimes the most direct route is not the best route…to lessen your footprint on nature, use the trail whenever possible. You might have to take a few extra steps, but in the end it will leave the grassy meadows intact. This cache is up near the highest elevation of the park. Follow the main path up, up and up. As you near the top you’ll see a bench beckoning you to sit and rest, and you’ll notice your GPS is trying to send you through a field into a group of trees. BUT WAIT!!! Here are those few extra steps I was talking about. Keep going up to the peak and enjoy the view of Napa – it’s not that much farther. After you’ve had a moment to take in the view (and recover from the climb), follow the West Perimeter Trail along the fence, heading west. A little bit down that hill you’ll see a smaller trail (Oak Leaf Trail) that branches right and goes into some trees. Here you will find a tree with more branches than an octopus has arms. Beyond the tree, the trail continues and will lead you to the cache. The cache can be found in a stump (that used to be the hollow of a tree that at some point in time fell).
**NOTE ~ There are currently fallen trees piled up between the trail and the cache's hiding spot. LOTS OF POISON OAK, so use caution. I will try to make it back up (without my dog, so she doesn't spread it everywhere) and relocate this cache to a spot closer to the trail to avoid this challenging situation that didn't exist years ago when the cache was first hidden.
