Geocache Description:

Cache is along a very nice trail in the heart of Welland. Located a mile from the parking lot. It is on the Wild Flower Trail. This part of the trail was my dogs favorite section.

Merritt Island

The trail on Merritt Island runs from the CN Rail Bridge south through the island across the Aqueduct and connects with the Greater Niagara Circle Route. It's a 4 km walk from the parking area at the Merritt Island Building to the train bridge - or 8km out and back. You will enjoy the company of families, joggers, roller blades and even a few recreational cyclists.

Merritt Island is host to ten wood carvings by celebrated artist JP Gauthier of Welland.

The wood carvings are titled:

The Vertical Farm
My Son
Eagles
Remembrance Day Tribute
Three Bears
Lone Wolf
Bear Hunter
Owl
Lion
Hidden Heron

Located in the first 1.75 km stretch of the island the carvings are a hidden gem.

The island is host to many bird species, fishing docks, "Wild Flower Trail" which sweeps down by the Welland River and many other treasures.

The park has different closing times depending on the Season. Please check the entrance gate for listed hours..
