Background:
Bowenville Reserve
This popular camping and fishing spot is located down the Bowenville-Norwin Rd, 4km south from the Warrego Highway. Turn off to the south on the highway at Bowenville. When travelling from the north, cross Oakey Creek and turn left into the reserve. It is on the southern banks of Oakey Creek. Bring your own drinking water and wood. (please note the conditions for open fires on the amenities block)
The Oakey Freshwater Fish Stocking Association continue to work hard to provide a suitalbe habitat for native fish such as Murray cod and yellow-belly, encouraging them to breed. Snags hidden under the water can be the bane of a fisherman’s life if a favourite lure is hooked and lost, but it seems our native fish find it hard to survive without them. This site was the first in the Queensland section of the Murray-Darling Basin to be established as part of the national Native Fish Strategy established by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission.
Colourful interpretive signs are now in place at Bowenville Reserve, describing the necessary attributes for healthy creeks and rivers.
There is a good amenities block and plenty of room for water side camping and picnics.
