Geocache Description:

Site of Franciscan Friary of Pubble

Situated on the site of the Franciscan Friary of Pubble near Newtownstewart however it is unfortunate that nothing but the cemetery remains. The cemetery itself dates back to 500AD or thereabouts and is a treat due to its ancient graves and history therein. Many of the gravestones look primitive and have been taken over by lichen and moss. Watch your step as some stones are quite short so there's the potential to trip up. In my research I have found 2 places which disagree with each other about the definition of Pubble. One source says that Pubble simply means "people" and another says it means "church." Anyone has any better ideas then I am open to suggestions. If you turn your back to the sign then you will see the back of Stewart Castle. It looks altogether more impressive from this view than from the front facade. If you haven't already seen the front then there is a cache their too GC20VRB. We have placed the cache outside the Cemetery rather than inside and we have also made it easy to find so that searching is kept to the minimum. The cache is close to the road so the number hunters can just cache and dash but if you're interested in history then this graveyard is a must see. The cache is a micro container near to BUT NOT IN the wall. This is an ancient site and also consecrated ground and should therefore be treated with the utmost respect. In other words, you DO NOT move anything or disrespect the site to find this cache!!
