Geocache Description:

Oru Park, which lies in the valley of the Pühajõgi River, occupies the area of 105 km2. The park was established in 1897-1901 around the summer palace of a Petersburg’s tradesman Grigori Jelisejev.

After Jelisejev’s immigration the park was left forgotten until 1935, when industrial workers decided to buy it from Jelisejev for 100 000 kroons and give it to the first president of Estonia Konstantin Päts. Starting from 1935 Oru park and its castle were the summer residence of the president. Until World War II the park was in excellent condition. The war destroyed the palace, many of the local facilities and a large part of the park. At the beginning of the last century a famous Russian poet Igor Severyanin spent some time here. High banks of the river valley, hilly coastal relief and rocky slope of Neide make the park remarkably diverse. One can enjoy a nice view of the river of Pühajõgi, the valley slopes, the flora of the slope’s and, of course, the sea. The number of plants in Oru Park is the biggest among all other parks in Estonia. It has 270 kinds and forms of various bushes and trees. Especially many exotic plants grow in ?õiametsa (Witches’ forest) and around the platform of the former palace. Among the coniferous kinds the most interesting are European larch, alpine pine-trees, mountain pine-trees, juniper trees from Virginia.

At the coordinates there is parking area where you see the castle gates and the map of the Park behind them. On the map there are X pictures.
