Hi Welcome to Purpledreamers fifth cache this cache brings you to yet another lovely spot on the Mighty Murray with views of Yarrawonga Caravan Park, down river in another and the Yarawonga Weir in another. A perfect spot for fishing or relaxing with a book.

The Yarrawonga Weir is the largest of the sixteen weirs on the Murray River. It is operated by the Rural Water Commission of Victoria, under the direction of its owner the Murray Darling Basin Commission. The storage created by the weir, Lake Mulwala, allows gravitational diversion of water through two main channels to irrigate large areas of land on the Riverina Plains of Victoria and New South Wales. Flood mitigation is a secondary role of the weir.

Attempts to manage the Murray river date back to at least 1863. Interstate rivalry hampered the development of any managemnet scheme for the next 40 years. Water was first diverted from the Murray in the 1880's. Construction of the weir started in 1934. Completed in 1939. With the filling of the Lake. Because of the outbreak of WWII the official opening of the weir did not happen untill 1989. A privately owned hydroelectric station and fish lift where added in 1994. Earthquake proofing works were undertaken throughout 2002. While it was closed it was modified to a single lane traffic. $13 Million upgrade to weir bridge official opened 2002. These two channels are servicing over 800,000 hectares.

Small Plastic container usual things logbok pen and small swaps.
