Jim Farnes Memorial Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

n7nsv: This was my first cache, and the one I cared the most about. However ... I'm archiving it for two reasons:
1. In the many years since I planted it, the little triangle of land it was on is being used as a parking spot for farm equipment, and has sprouted several "no trespassing" signs. This is reason enough to remove it.
2. I don't have as much time for caching as I once did, and Groundspeak's recent efforts to monetize the hobby has left a bad taste in my mouth. Seems like a good time to make an exit.....

Geocache Description:

Jim F. Farnes Memorial Cache

This cache is placed in honor of my father who departed this life January 20, 2009. It’s placed on Spring Creek Rd. a bit further up the road from one of his favorite places, the Walla Walla Muzzleloader Club shooting range. You are looking for a green ammo box, placed in a little triangle of ground where three roads meet. It is not intended to be difficult to find, but it is hidden under a lot of natural camo.

Although I’ve only been ‘caching for a couple of months, my favorite caches are those that carry some kind of theme. Since this cache is a memorial to my father, I’ve themed it after his favorite hobby (muzzleloading). I would very much appreciate it if anything added to the cache could keep the muzzleloading / buck skinning / mountain man theme (In keeping with placement rules, nothing explosive or flammable please). In addition to the stuff listed below, I placed several copies of this memorial booklet, and you are welcome to take one, especially if you knew him and would enjoy the memories.

Dad was a fairly well known clinical psychologist in Walla Walla. If you knew him and are comfortable doing so, would you share a memory or two, either in the log or on-line?

Initial contents:
- Unregistered travel bug for the FTF prize!
- Two home made .50 cal. Lead balls (balls only, no gunpowder!)
- .50 cal. Brass cleaning brush
- Small piece of agate used with a steel striker to strikes sparks into the char-cloth. The flint-and-steel is my favorite way to start a fire.
- .50 - .59cal patches. The lead balls are wrapped in these patches on their way down the barrel.
- Cleaning patches – always keep your muzzleloader clean!
- Ear plugs – Safety first!
- Small pieces of flint that are held in the jaws of the hammer on a flintlock
muzzleloader. When the hammer falls, the flint strikes sparks into a small pan of gunpowder. A jet of flame moves through a tiny hole in the barrel, igniting the main charge. If you’re lucky!
- Char-cloth. Made from 100% cotton, this is used to catch a spark from a flint and steel.
- Small cloth pouch. Useful for holding small items such as lead balls, flints or whatever you need contained!

4/18/10 Congratulations to hitech101 for FTF!

UPDATE 10-23-11 Cache has been found and re-located slightly. Although it blends in nicely with it's surroundings, please leave some of the natural camo in place.

UPDATE 2-15-13 The shooting range is gone, but the cache remains! I also bumped up the terrain rating 1/2 point after re-reading the guidelines and bush-wacking my way to it.
