Cattle Kate Country

Across the highway from this cache is the very decorative entry to the area where Cattle Kate lived and died. She was a very colorful character who was very famous in this area. Much has been written about this woman, some of it not too flattering. From my research, it appears that she was simply a pioneer who was attempting to homestead some property, raise some cattle and live her life as she saw fit. She made the mistake of raising the ire of some very powerful and ruthless established ranchers. She was eventually hanged from a tree by this group of ranchers. Her killers were never brought to justice, some say because of the wealth and connections of these ranchers.
If this story interests you, there are several websites which give many more details into the life and times of this woman. There was a book written which give the entire history of Cattle Kate which is available from several online sources. The cache is located at a turnout so you can park off the roadway to look for the cache. I hope you enjoy the area and the cache.
