Guadalupe River Coin Exchange Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Galileo the cat: Construction and clearing of greenery changed the area greatly. The original spot is now very exposed and down a very slippery slope. This idea may be re-imagined on a different spot on the trail but for now, sadly, we are archiving this cache. Thanks to over 150 finders in seven years. [:(]

Geocache Description:

This cache is an echo of one we liked in Hawaii- Pulehu Coin Exchange (GC1427) and in the sincerest form of geocache flattery we're stealing the idea. Note that this cache is ONLY accessible from the East Side Guadalupe River Trail. The parking area just east of the cache site is separated from the trail by a high fence.

This cache is for trading coins. This includes Geocoins, foreign coins, swag coins, wooden nickels and so on. You are very welcome to come and sign the log even if you don't bring a coin to trade. Geocoins are to be kept moving; so if you find one feel free to take it and move it along like any trackable in a cache.

The location is along the Guadalupe River trail on the east side of the river. The trail itself on this side runs from downtown San Jose to join the Bay Trail in Alviso. It crosses the Route 237 trail as well. The east side trail is now paved from downtown San Jose to Alviso. Even skinny tire road bikes can use it, though underpasses where it crosses streets and freeways can be muddy. There are several caches along the trail on both sides. Going north and then west on the 237 trail will take you to the Sunnyvale Baylands.

Public access points nearest the cache are at Trimble Road 0.5 miles south and Montague Expressway 0.6 miles north. The closest legal parking spots are at VTA River Oaks and at Rivermark shopping center, it's about a half mile walk to the cache from either one. There is also limited parking at Trimble Road.

Lunchtime walkers will find access to the trail through fence gaps behind the industrial buildings on Orchard Drive and Orchard Parkway but these are posted as restricted parking. Parking and trail access are both available at the River Oaks VTA park and ride about a mile north of the cache.

The container is now a medium lock-and-lock container. Original contents included a pen and logbook and several coins from five continents; including an Eisenhower dollar for the FTF, an English penny, and some old wheat cents and Buffalo nickels. Plus a Cyprus coin brought from the Pulehu cache. Terrain difficulty rating is high since the final 10-15 feet is steep, below the trail away from the river. The cache itself is concealed with natural material.

update 12/27/2016 FYI- The construction opposite GZ is ongoing but it appears that the cache area is not being disturbed. The tree nearby has grown over and through the fence.
