Charters Towers Weir Park is about 10 km out of town.
After gold was discovered in the area, people lived, for almost 20 years, only relying on the flow of local creeks and wells. 1891 a pumping station was completed, water was pumped from the junction of the Burdekin River and Sheepstation Creek through 20 miles of pipe to the town.
In 1902 (after a severe drought) it was decided to build a weir at the Burdekin River with a capacity of over 400,000,000 gallons - an exceptional scale for the time.
It was completed on November 22nd and the first rains in December filled it to it's capacity over night, it was overflowing at 7am on December 11th.
In 1996 the Charters Towers City Council raised the wall by 3m, which nearly trippled the dam's capacity.
It now also serves as a popular recreational venue for the people of Charters Towers.
The park does have BBQs, picnic tables, toilets and a playground. There is also a boat ramp nearby.
The cache container is a 1l plastic bottle.
It contained at time of placement: logbook, stashnote, pen and swap items (I tried to put something in for everyone).
For the FTF I put in a little bottle of handsanitizer, always good to have - if you don't like it just pick something else.
