Geocache Description:

The Civil War Memorial cache is a virtual cache that will take you on a multi-legged journey to some historic and out of the way places, culminating in a visit to The National Civil War Museum. Hours are M-F, 9-5, weekends, 10-5. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for students or $20 a family. (Not required to complete cache)

The total length of the cache is just over 14 miles. If you do the cache during the week, Waypoint #2 may involve a parking fee. The mansion at Waypoint #2 is also a museum (not Civil War). If you are interested, check it out at Historical Society of Dauphin County.

All of the information needed at Waypoint #1, #2 and #3 can be found on the Internet and by using maps, although it would take a Sherlock Holmes to find it all! If you choose to take that route, email me the coordinates of waypoint 2, 3 and the final destination and I will give you the bearing. It will still require a visit to the museum to get the 4th piece of information and complete the cache. (You will miss out one some great scenery on the trip though!)

Use these to decode your waypoints: (Zero is not substituted, O, N & W are skipped)

  • AB/CD/EFGH = MM/DD/YYYY (Waypoint #1)
  • IJKL = YYYY (Waypoint #2)
  • MP/QR/STUV = MM/DD/YYYY (Waypoint #3)

For a preformatted table to make it easier, go here

WP#1: The starting location is where the Civil War Dead are honored. It is only fitting that you need the years when he was born and when he died. Use waypoint #1 cipher to decrypt the next location, which is Abraham Lincoln’s 1st Secretary of War’s home at N40 A5.D79 W07G 5H.7DC (Use Waypoint #1 cipher to decrypt)

WP#2:While Simon may have been famous during the Civil War, someone else who rests nearby built his home. Cross the street and stroll by the water to find your next clue. You need to know when the man from Yorkshire left this earth. Now, on to Simon’s last and permanent earthly abode. It can be found at N40 IG.D0J, W0JG 5H.D0B (Use Waypoint #1 & #2 ciphers to decrypt.)

WP#3: Don’t rush through this waypoint, mosey around and step back in time. You need to know the departing date of Simon. When you are done, it is on the next and final resting place for this virtual cache, located at N40 SP.DKD, W0JP 5S.DPC. (Use Waypoint #1, #2 #3 ciphers to decrypt.)

WP#4: You have now arrived at the National Civil War Museum. This is the end, but you need one more clue to finish the cache. Standing at the last waypoint, cast your eyes along a bearing of BLRº  True. Enjoy the museum!

Clues needed to qualify as completing this cache are:

  • 1. The name of the person used for the birth/death dates at Waypoint #1
  • 2. The name of the person used for the birth/death dates at Waypoint #2
  • 3. Mr. Cameron’s wife’s name after he died. Waypoint #3
  • 4. The building you saw on the bearing BLRº  True

Please email them to me for confirmation!
