The original mill built by Daniel Peck in 1821, was a small structure built on four posts along the Little Kanawha River. Purchased by William Fidler in the 1840’s, using slave labor to enlarge the mill and build a dam a short distance upstream, the mill remained in the Fidler family for the next 140 years. In 1942, a flood washed out the dam that supplied water to the mill and operations ceased.
At one time, Upshur County had numerous mills; however, Fidler’s Mill is the only one remaining. The mill still contains the original giant granite-like buhrs, imported in sections from France, wool-picking and wool carding machines.
Fidler’s Mill is located in Arlington, Upshur County, WV. The mill is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m .to 4:00 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For more information, please call 304.924.6112.
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, Fidler’s Mill remains a treasured landmark in Upshur County.
