Geocache Description:

This is a black nano cache. BYOP

Upshur County was formed in 1851 from parts of Lewis, Randolph and Barbour Counties and named for Abel Parker Upshur, former Secretary of Navy under President William H. Harrison. Mr. Upshur died in an excursion boat explosion in 1844.

The first Courthouse was completed in 1854 and was situated on the same two lots as the present one. Robert Maxwell was the architect and the building cost $7,300.00 to construct. The Courthouse was damaged by fire three times in the first six months and saw heavy abuse during the Civil War. The remains of the building were removed in 1898 and replaced with the current Courthouse. The current Upshur County Courthouse was built in 1899 at a cost of $37,650.00. Harrison Albright of Charleston, WV was the designer. Following a 2.3 million dollar bequeath from Judge Jack Dowell Jennings, the Upshur County Courthouse Annex was constructed in 1994. Chapman Technical Group with offices in Buckhannon and St, Albans, WV was the architect, and Breckenridge Corporation of Buckhannon, WV was the general contractor.

The Courthouse is open from 8:00 am. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. For more information, check the county website at www.upshurcounty.org
