AN ERRATIC BOULDER

An erratic boulder is a boulder of rock which is of a different type than the local rocks. Erratic boulders are often more correctly termed “glacial erratics" as they were generally picked up, transported long distances and then finally deposited by melting glaciers.
"Erratics" take their name from the Latin word "eraticus" meaning to wander or stray, often over distances of hundreds of kilometres. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders such as Big Rock (16,500 tons) in Alberta.
Geologists identify erratics by studying the rocks surrounding the position of the erratic and the composition of the erratic itself. Erratics are significant because:
* Since they are transported by glaciers, they are one of a series of indicators which mark the path of prehistoric glacier movement. Their lithographic origin can be traced to the parent bed rock, allowing for confirmation of the ice flow route.
* They were generally carried into an area by glaciers, but many have since been re-deposited by rivers on or under river floodplains, and humans, in building and land clearing, are significant agents of erratic transport and deposition. Thus houses, walls and roads will all contain erratic material.
Many erratics are of notable size and beauty. Some are used as monuments in squares and parks, or along motorways or main roads. Many are marked with metal plaques to indicate an interesting historical spot or event. In other areas, much of the local building fabric has been heavily influenced by erratics, in stone walls, ancient tombs, or farmhouses.
Most erratics however are smaller and generally unnoticed. They lie perhaps in your garden, in your garden wall, or in the wall of some buildings nearby. You may walk on erratics on the road on your way to school or pick them up at a riverside, lake side or sea beach. Remembering that any stone out of place is an erratic, you will find that you are in fact surrounded by them.

MASSI ERRATICI
