Geocache Description:

Mt Whitney Fish Hatchery

Golden Trout Cache

Built in 1917, the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery is still the sole source of Golden Trout eggs in California. The Golden Trout is the State Fish of California. The building was designed by a team of six men, led by Charles Dean, of the California State Department of Engineering.
The team was instructed "To design a building that would match the mountains, would last forever, and would be a showplace for all time." The building is constructed of native granite collected within a quarter mile of the site. The walls are two to three feet thick. None of the stones used in construction were cut, but were "sorted to fit". The grounds were landscaped by a gardener brought in from San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Approximately 3,500 tons of boulders were used in the walls. When constructed in 1917, it was the largest and best equipped fish hatchery in California.

The stately building and grounds host high school graduations, weddings, concerts, family picnics and numerous other functions.
Over 60,000 visitors enjoy this location annually.

In 2007, the surrounding area was burned in "The Inyo Complex" fire. This fire consumed over 55,000 acres of land. Thankfully the hatchery buildings and grounds were spared. However, In July 2008, the same area was devastated by the "Oak Creek" flood and most of the area was destroyed. This flood, caused by a heavy thunderstorm on the burned areas, brought a wall of mud and ash down the Sierra into Oak Creek. The mud flow went through the hatchery site. A four foot layer of mud and debris was left throughout the grounds of the hatchery.
The main water intake structure was destroyed as well as many houses, farms, residences, vehicles and other structures.
Thanks to the "Friends of the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery" and hundreds of volunteers throughout the United States, the structures and grounds are being repaired.

Hope you enjoy the area.
