If any of you have been around geocaching for any amount of time,
then you might wonder how it all began. Well, that is a long story
which can be found in the History section under the Resources tab
on the main page.
But to condense it to a few lines, the U.S. Government decided
it was time to let people use the satellites we paid for to
pinpoint our location on the earth. On May 1, 2000, Selective
Availability was shut off, and instantly GPS receivers had a
tremendous upgrade in their ability to precisely pinpoint their
location.
On May 3, 2000, the first cache was hidden. Ten years later,
over one million caches have been placed, and three to four million
people enjoy geocaching as a past-time.
Its time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of "throwing the
switch" on Selective Availability, and 10 Years of Geocaching!
