Geocache Description:

There is ample parking all along the pier for this cache.

A short walk around the harbour and cliffs in Stonehaven.

Cache placed for Getting BACK to caching event GC25EA4 Please don’t log before 21st April 2010

Walk past the harbour & boardwalk then its grassy path to the site of Red Craig Quarry.
On your right is the steep grassy Common Brae, known now as Bervie Braes.
History has a nasty habit of repeating itself. When this area was used as a quarry to supply stone to build Stonehaven, the land became unstable and landslides were not unknown the harbour was frequently filled with rubble from the hillside.
Unfortunately there is plenty evidence of the recent landslides when you take a stroll around this part of the harbour
The sandstone quarried here was especially suited to building, much of it being used to build the houses you see around the harbour. However the improvements in 1826/27 to the harbour itself used stone from 2 nearby quarries, and it was brought to the site on a specially constructed railway, a trademark of the Stevenson family who drew up the plans for the upgrading of the harbour.
