The BUNKER is actually the remains of an old farm building, the 12 inch thick concrete walls of this 18x18, 11 ft high structure were probably too formidable to be destroyed when the rest of the buildings were leveled as the area joined the forest preserves.
The farm went out of existence in the 1940's. Although thousands of people pass within 200 feet, few know of this remnant of history. All wood, bricks and other potentially harmful debris of an abandoned building have been removed; all that remains are extremely strong concrete walls.
About a hundred feet south of “The Bunker” is a small, dry channel that extends through the Sag Valley from Route 83 to Willow Spring Road. In its day, this canal drained the valley – what is now Saganashkee Slough was farmland! (photos/maps in cache) The cache is a 2”x10” plastic pipe
This dry canal is important – it links together history, geology and 2 other caches that will reveal more secrets of this area.
PARK on 107th Street, 2.4 miles west of Willow Spring Rd at Dynamite Road bike path (N41 41.788 W87 55.283).
You can walk down 107th Street sucking exhaust fumes and dodging cars,
OR follow the bike path 300 ft south and bushwhack down the old canal,
OR continue south on the bike path and enjoy an easy, scenic hike along the Cal-Sag Channel.
2013: The newly completed bike path runs THROUGH the bunker — within inches of the cache! The new path also takes you over other remains of the old farm.
