Geocache Description:

Appley Bridge, according to Wikipedia, derives its name from an apple tree which stood beside the bridge over the River Douglas. Among other things it is known for a meteorite which fell near the village in 1914. Wikipedia also tells the story of the Skull House in which is the skull of a monk who was slaughtered in the Civil War - it seems that every time the house owner tries to get rid of the skull something nasty happens to him and the skull returns to its place on the mantlepiece.
Although there are several caches around the village, while on a ramble along the canal, I wandered off onto a patch of land between canal and river. It seems that this has been a tip for the disposal of waste from the lino factory and bits stick out from the ground in several places but otherwise it is a quiet retreat.
Unfortunately, it also seems to be a favourite place for the young boozers of the area and so I ask any cacher looking for this cache to bring along a shopping bag and fill it with the various bottles and cans you will likely come across and so keep up the practice of CITO (Cache In Trash Out).
Please take care that the cache is properly covered when you leave it or it will soon itself be a piece of trash. It might be best to avoid the area when the boozers are around.
