A MOST CHALLENGING “HORSE” PUZZLE

When Squire Tralawny passed away, he left a will whereby he bequeathed his best jumping horses to his three sons, John, James, and William. When he died, however, it was found that the number of horses in the stable was seventeen, a number which was divisible neither by two, three, or nine.
The three brothers hired a smart lawyer who rode his horse over to the stable and came about a solution for everyone involved. Your question is: How many horses did each brother receive to satisfy the bequest of the will?

Your answer for John will be “H”, James will be “I” and William will be “J”.
