Geocache Description:

The Parks-Bently Place is a great piece of South Glens Falls history. A fairly quick park and grab. There are picnic tables available. I do suggest you do this from dawn to dusk as there is an active neighborhood watch. As long as there is not alot of snow winter caching is ok though they dont shovel the area. Geofrenzie and I hope everyone enjoys this place as much as we do.

The Parks-Bentley Place, the home of the Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls, is a nicely restored house with architecture representing two historic time periods. The Parks-Bentley Place is named after two of the prominent families who occupied this site.

The first family to settle in Moreau were the Parks Family. Elijah Parks purchased 800 acres of land in South Glens Falls in 1766. His son, Daniel, settled "on the flat down the river" at the present Parks-Bentley Place. Daniel, who was a veteran of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, built a log home on the property in 1773 and settled there with his wife Lydia and eight children.

Cornelius Bentley and his family occupied the Parks-Bentley site from the mid 1800's through the early 1900's. Cornelius purchased the house in 1866. It remained in the Bentley Family until the death of Cornelius's daughter, Harriet, a local commercial artist, teacher, local historian, cartographer and author, in 1930.
'
The Parks original house was a 1 1/2 story, one room, heavy timber frame house of mortice and tenon construction with hand hewn beams and is now set up as am 18th century kitchen called the "keeping room. The Beehive fireplace and the loft are of special interest to visitors. There is a barn and summer kitchen (now a room) attached.

In 1820, the house was purchased by Sheldon and Daniel Benedict, two brothers who were responsible for building the main part of the house. this two story part was built between 1830 and 1840 and was done in Greek Revival architecture using bricks that were made on the property at the Benedict's Brick Factory.

The house was said to be part of the Underground Railroad with an assumed hiding place called the "slave hold."

After many owners, the house eventually became the property of the Glens Falls portland Cement Company. In 1986 the company donated the Parks-Bentley Place to the Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls. The Parks-Bentley Place was listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places on March 16th, 1994.

Also on the grounds is the Moreau No. 8 Schoolhouse. Circa 1812, this is an original post and beam one-room schoolhouse that has been rebuilt in typical style of the time period.

The Parks-Bentley Place is located at 53 Ferry Boulevard, South Glens Falls, NY 12803 and can be reached at (518)-745-7741. They are open for tours years round on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. and in July and August on Saturdays from 11-3 p.m. also.

The Parks-Bently Place cache was placed with permission from the Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls. Among the many items in the cache are some hand made nails from the original school house. These are very old and people are welcome to take them. The nails were donated to the cache by the Historical Society.
