The Dastard is named for the twenty-fourth book of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. Xanth is a place where "appearance counts for most of reality" and nearly everyone has some magical talent, even if it is only the ability to change the color of popcorn.
Many malevolent menaces have imperiled the magical land of Xanth in its long and storied history. But none has been as despicable as the Dastard. Once a common country boy who's only talent was the Stupid Idea, Anomy sold his soul to a detestable demon for the power to erase events and rewrite history for his own devious ends. Lacking a conscience and filled with craven self-loathing, he roamed the width and breadth of Xanth in search of anyone happier than he was. Once he found them, he used his malevolent talent to "unhappen" their happiness so that others could share in his misery. Now the entire future of Xanth is at the mercy of the Dastard's every whim.
But this depraved desperado underestimates the courage and cleverness of a young girl named Becka, who, because she is the daughter of Draco Dragon (and a human female), can transform herself into a fearsome dragon at the speed of thought. She is sent to the Dastard by the Good Magician in order to help deal with him, and given Awareness, so she can remember the Dastard's Unhappenings. With the help of a color band of triplet princesses, Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm, as brave companions, Becka challenges the Dastard with the greatest magic of all—the human heart.
