Geocache Description:

Located on the Fernberg Road which is an extension of Highway 169 North East of Ely, Minnesota. On some maps it may be listed as ROOKIE LAKE, but the sign on the Fernberg says ROOKIE POND. I WILL DELETE ANY SPOILERS(LOGS/PICTURES) THAT INDICATE WHERE THE CACHE IS LOCATED or of the CONTAINER. A scenic picture of the view is OK. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE FOOD OR LIGHTERS IN THE CONTAINER. Snow depth, parking & location make the cache inaccessible in winter. BYOP USFS PERMIT

This is cache with a view. Most likely you will see people pulled off at this overlook for the view. I think everyone is looking for a moose-especially in the early morning or at dusk.

PARK IN THE SIGNED PARKING LOT ( coords given )and walk to the cache which is off to the side- NOT DOWN THE CLIFF. YOU DO NOT GO OVER THE GUARD RAIL. DO NOT PARK ON HIGHWAY 169- it is a very busy road with very little pull off room.

THE ROCKS AND LICHEN ARE SLIPPERY WHEN WET. BE CAREFUL. You will be bushwhacking through rough ground.- wear good ankle support. Not appropriate for young children.

The container is a clear peanut butter jar with a geocaching logo ID.

If you know what you are looking for, depending on the season, you will find sweet delicacies - an extra bonus to the cache spot.

Rumor has it that the person who named this lake was an immigrant who wanted to call the lake Crooked Lake, but when he spoke the name the cartographer understood him to say ROOKIE LAKE and so that is what was written on the map. It is also known as ROOKIE POND.
