When I was in grade school my father's work took us to England
for the year. We lived in a Victorian semi-detached house on
Whiteknight's Road. While it was a wonderful house with a great
address it did not have a garage on the premises. Having to rent a
separate space for a car wasn't an attractive option so my entire
family mostly walked or bicycled for transportation. When a longer
trip was planned my parents borrowed a car from friends.
It was in a borrowed Morris Mini Minor Traveller that we went on
holiday to Austria with my mother, father, brother and sister as
well as enough luggage for two weeks. I rode the entire distance in
the space behind the last seat. I can't recall if they opened the
rear doors for me or if I had to climb over the seats to get out. I
do remember being quite happy in my cozy little spot while enjoying
a panoramic view out both sets of windows.
We crossed the English Channel in a small, non-pressurized,
turbo-prop cargo plane. There were seats for the passengers and we
didn't have to ride in the car although it would probably have been
the same level of comfort. I don't think there was heat, it was
extremely noisy and far too bumpy to read.
