Geocache Description:

Everyone places special Earth Day-themed caches this time of year, so I think I'll buck the trend and place a Green Day-themed cache.

I already live my life in as environmentally conscious manner as I can afford. I have all sorts of trees and plants already growing on my property, suffer through cold and heat for as long as possible in lieu of running the A/C, and was abiding by the principles of CITO long before I began caching. For those reasons, I don't generally make a big deal of Earth Day.

Which is why I decided to make this cache about my favorite band, Green Day!

REVIEWERS TAKE NOTE: This is not an endorsement or enticement to buy Green Day albums -- it's just an appreciation.

There are a couple reasons why this is a funny choice for me:

First, I'm not generally into punk music, because most of it just sounds like noise to me. I recognize it as a serious musical genre, originally developed out of the typical need of youth to express themselves (don't laugh -- remember what adults said about rock 'n' roll when it first arrived). The difference between this and other genres is that if you don't construct a workable framework, your song won't simply be of bad quality, it will be little more than cacophany. The members of Green Day actually compose melody and harmony, and consider the importance of intelligibility in getting their message across. It also helps that they're damned fine musicians (most particularly the drummer). There has been serious debate within the punk community whether Green Day is (or ever was) really "punk", but I think it's safe to say they're solid hardcore rock now.

Second, there's more than a little irony in Green Day being my favorite band. By the time that I began listening to their music, my sister had already dated and broken up with the band's lead singer, having spent a little more than a year as the general manager of the 924 Gilman Street Project -- the club where Green Day first gained wide-spread notoriety. I only learned of this after playing one of the band's CDs when she was in my car, and her telling me of her connection with it. She'd even been filmed for Green Day's first music video, but ended up on the cutting room floor.

Anyway, I just really like the band's music, most especially the albums Dookie, Nimrod, and American Idiot.

THE CACHE

This is a reasonably-sized "lock'n'lock"-style container peanut butter jar, decorated with fan art related to the band; so it is concealed if not camo'd. It is large enough for small swag, and contains a log and pen. There is a compilation CD I made with some of my favorite Green Day songs for FTF (I am a copyright stickler, so paid to download and then burn each song onto the CD).

There is a wide enough shoulder here for a single vehicle to park, but only just. Take extreme care, because cars go fairly fast along this rural road. Terrain is listed as a two because the approach to the cache is muddy right now, and a bit steep. One side of the container's hiding place currently has thistles, so I'd advise gloves when retrieving.
