Geocache Description:

MAYBELLE GLANDON HASTINGS - 1917 - 2010

Aunt Maybelle spent the last 4 years of her life as a resident at
the California Veterans Home – Barstow.

California Department of Veterans Affairs runs four homes for
California Veterans. The Home in Barstow is beautifully landscaped,
spacious and friendly. The food is great and the staff friendly and
accommodating. This a wonderful place provided by the State of
California for our veterans.

This Cache is a Memorial to this special person. Maybelle was
born in Twisp, Washington in 1917. She became an RN after finishing
High School. At the end of WWII she served as a Navy Nurse.
Following discharge she took advantage of the GI Bill to return to
college to get her degree in Public Health Nursing. She and her
husband developed an Orange and Avocado Ranch in San Diego County
in the late 1960’s. After his death she became the only
female Rancher in San Diego County.

After her passing on April 19, 2010 the Social Worker described
her as: “… gracious, non-judgmental, non-punitive,
selfless, showing wisdom, understanding and equanimity.” She
had a positive influence on all she came in contact with. Both the
staff and the residents described her as a special person. All will
miss her. Her life was dedicated to others, giving and caring for.
Even her last hours were spent thinking of others, not complaining
about her pain or discomfort.

Because Maybelle is a Veteran she qualifies for the US Navy Burial at Sea Program. We have been waiting for a ship since hear passing. As of today, March 9, 2011, Aunt Maybelle is on the USS Thach, out of San Diego on her way for burial at sea. This should occur in the next 30 days. Following the ceremony I will be receiving documentation with pictures and GPS Coordinates. After I receive them I will post what is appropriate. This may not come for several months. Ship has to be back in port before they send them. Below is the official link to the ship. A google search will give you other links about this ship, if you are interested. (visit link)

Aug 3, 2011 - Just received this email from USS Thach:
"Mr. Thomas;

Our intent is to send a small memorial set which will include a chartlet, flag, and a photo CD from the ceremony upon our return from deployment. Attached are photos from the ceremony. Please ensure that we have your address so that we can send you the memorial package upon our return. Thank you.
