The River Yarrow rises on Anglezarke Moor, and soon becomes a tree lined gorge.
The Yarrow drains into a series of reservoirs, first the Yarrow Reservoir, and then into the adjoining Anglezarke and Rivington reservoirs. The construction of these reservoirs arose from an Act of Parliament in 1847, allowing the growing city of Liverpool to impound the waters of the River Douglas, Yarrow and the Hoddlesworth. Work began in 1852 and the supply to Liverpool commenced in 1857.
This is the very first (mini) waterfall, or drop at all in the river, that appears downstream of source. The downward path continues all the way to Croston, and eventually to the sea via the Ribble.
