Geocache Description:

These Co-ordinates take you to the logical starting point - Begin - although you don't have to start here. To find this Traditional Cache, you must first visit three locations in the attractive village of Riccall in order to piece together the co-ordinates for the final cache. There are four simple clues (2 at one location), each of which will give you one figure to replace A, B, C & D in the final clue. These can be done in any order, but South to North makes most sense – ie begin at Begin.

Riccall has two good restaurants, one Indian and the other Italian, a Fish & Chip shop, two Pubs, the Post Office, several shops, St Mary’s Church, the Village Green, the Recreation area with an aerial slide and the Regen Community Centre. It forms part of the Selby to York Cycle Route that uses the old Railway track bed for most of the way North from Riccall to the outskirts of York.

The tour of only one and a half miles can be done by bike, on foot or, for the very lazy, even by car plus a little walk. It could form a leisurely diversion as part of a cycle ride in either direction. Whichever way you choose you will see most of the Village’s attractions, and you could even make pleasant use of the services provided.

Riccall has been famous for many years, even as far back as 1066 when the Viking King Harald Hardrada rested his troops at Riccall following his victory over the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Fulford, before marching to Stamford Bridge where his army was defeated by Harold Godwineson, and Hardrada was killed. The victorious Harold then had to march his troops all the way back to Hastings where they famously met up against William the Conqueror, and Harold got one in the eye. They were very violent times for sure. Geocaching is a far more pleasant endeavour.

When placed the final cache contained a FTF Geocoin, Purple Carabiner Compass TB, Black Carabiner Torch TB, A Sea Shell from Filey plus a Log Book and Pen.

We hope you enjoy the hunt and your trip around our very pleasant village.
