Hill Legs Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CinderTheDog: I’m going to go ahead and archive this so that someone else can use the space. It’s right next to the ancient Portland Health course stop #7, so maybe a series for those?

Geocache Description:

For local runners, Terwilliger Boulevard represents a hilly challenge. This geocache is called Hill Legs as a tribute to the sore muscles and persistence required to master these hills. The cache is round, about four inches across and six inches deep. It holds items used by runners – bandaids, hand wipes, lip gloss and a medal from a race. It’s located near a place where runners like to stop if they need a break.

Adjacent to the path for running and walking is the city park known for George Himes, a printer and historian who was the curator and director of the Oregon Historical Society. At one time, George Himes Park contained the Portland Health Course, an outdoor fitness path mixed in with the natural surroundings. Participants jogged between stations and followed the signs for instructions on doing various exercises to improve overall fitness. Near SW Hamilton, there is a groomed part of the park that is popular with runners because of the water fountain and rest rooms.

In 1978, the popular 15k Cascade Runoff was launched and crossed the challenging hills of Terwilliger. It was the first local running race to provide prize money to the winners and attracted runners capable of producing world records on the course. When the main sponsor pulled out, this race morphed into the River City Distance Classic. Eventually, it transitioned into the 15k Shamrock Run which is held on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick’s Day. The course goes south on Terwilliger, over Capitol Highway and then to Barbur Boulevard.

The Run Like Hell Half reverses this course and takes the runners from Barbur along Terwilliger to downtown. This race is run with a Halloween theme covering a total of 13.1 miles.

Whether participating in the Shamrock Run in the spring or the Run Like Hell Half in the fall, local runners know that they can get a hill workout by incorporating Terwilliger into their route. If this inspires you to run, Portland has a huge running community that welcomes beginners of any level.
