Geocache Description:

The Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1870 and is also known as the Ringo Cemetery (the Highland or Clarkes area of Oregon was orginally called Ringo, for the pioneer family).

Please be sensitive to the environment and graves at Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery. Please use the parking at N 45° 12.062 W 122° 28.290 and be sure to use the stairs at N 45° 12.062 W 122° 28.253 to avoid climbing up the hillside.

Burton Berger

(02/27/1922-01/27/2000) Survived 43 months as a prisoner of the Japenese and survivied the Bataan Death March; executive director of the Nebraska State Bar (1970-80), licensed pilot.

William Livingston
(1836-1912) One of the first black men to travel West from Missouri to Oregon, he traveled with the Ringo family, but was kept in a box during the day for his safety and only after dark was allowed out to walk, for his protection.

Michael Earl Marshal
(06/17/1945-12/12/1999) Born in Bend, U.S. Marine during Vietnam War, then a recruiter for U.S. Army for 10 years.

Andrew Jackson Mayfield
(02/09/1811-06/09/1874) Born in Tennessee, and emigrated to Oregon in 1967, a Deacon of the Baptist Church.

Avon Francis Mayfield
(06/16/12-06/06/1961) Served both Army and Navy in WWII, later worked for Oregon State Police and Oregon City Police.

Ferris Mayfield
(11/26/1875-10/8/1943) Born in Oregon City, later moved to The Dalles for more than 25 years, being the owner of Columbia Highway Market and Mayfield Slaughter House. He passed away unexpectedly while awaiting a train at Union Station.

Green Willis Mayfield
(04/08/1835-10/8/1909) Born in Springfield, Ill, traveled to California for the gold rush, then moved to Missouri, and at age 32 he married, then he, his wife and his parents moved to Oregon by mule team, and homesteaded in the Highlands area.

Judge Joseph Ringo
(10/3/1806-05/03/1881) Born in Henry County, KY, later moved to Missouri where the Governor appointed him a judge when Adair County was formed in 1840. In 1865 he and his family moved to Oregon in the wagon train led by Joseph Dameron Knight, settling in Clackamas County, in the area formerly known as Ringo Point and now known as Clarke or the Clarke District.
