Towards the end of 1923 Okaihau became the northern most termius of the New Zealand Railway Network.

Following much debate and pressure from local industry, work commenced to extend the line north.

A combination of the 30's depression and a change in Government saw the abandonment of the project.

The railway never saw regular service and the line, that had been laid, was pulled up during World War 2.

More evidence of the railway corridor can be found at Cache GC12YNH in Rangiahua.
